Weekend Plans: Sorted – Things to Do in Edinburgh This Weekend
We look at Three Ways you can Make the Most of Your Weekend, in and around Edinburgh

Looking for fresh ideas to make the most of your weekend in and around Edinburgh? Whether you fancy a slow Sunday wandering Stockbridge, a wholesome countryside escape to Craigies Farm, or a scenic day trip to the charming village of Culross to visit The Mercat, we’ve got you covered. From coffee and artisan treats, to farm-fresh fruit and historic streets, here are three perfect ways to spend your weekend.
The Mercat, Culross

"I wanted to create a place for a great walk, followed by exceptional coffee and cake in a beautiful, relaxed setting. Since such a place didn’t exist, we decided to create it ourselves. I wanted a space with curated homewares to browse through and perhaps pick up a lovely ceramic or...a bottle of natural wine to enjoy later."
The historic Fife village of Culross has long been a favourite with Outlander fans (it doubled as Cranesmuir!) and history lovers thanks to its cobbled streets, pretty cottages and the impressive Culross Palace. Now there’s another reason to visit: The Mercat, a chic new café and homeware store from the creator of The Dundonald, designed to offer the ultimate “perfect day off” experience.
Inside, you’ll find stunning Art Nouveau details—including original listed tiles that inspired the warm colour palette—alongside curated homewares and a seasonal menu celebrating the best of Scottish produce. Think freshly baked bread, artisan cheese, natural wines, charcuterie, jams and chocolates, with provisions from favourites like IJ Mellis, Unorthodox Roasters, Great Glen Charcuterie and L’Art Du Vin. Beyond the food, The Mercat offers beautiful ceramics, linens and tableware, plus an ever-changing collection of vintage pieces. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy a coffee, browse for a unique ceramic, and leave with flowers, wine and a wedge of farmhouse cheese to savour later.
And the setting? Just a few steps from the iconic Mercat Cross—one of Fife’s most photographed spots and an Outlander filming location—it’s as picturesque as it gets. Pair your visit with a scenic walk and a wander through historic Culross for the perfect day trip from Edinburgh.
Sunday in Stockbridge, Edinburgh

There are few better ways to spend a Sunday in Edinburgh than a slow day in Stockbridge. This stunning neighbourhood has a village feel, full of independent shops, great food and pretty Georgian streets that are made for wandering.
Start your day at the Stockbridge Market (every Sunday, 10am–4pm), a firm favourite for locals and visitors alike. Here you’ll find stalls piled high with artisan breads, cheeses, handmade crafts and tempting street food. Grab a coffee from The Bearded Barista, then take your time exploring Edinburgh. It’s a great spot to pick up treats for later too, like small-batch jams or speciality chocolate.
Once you’ve had your fill of market browsing, stroll along Raeburn Place, Stockbridge’s bustling main street. It’s lined with independent shops and boutiques—perfect for a little window shopping (or actual shopping). Pop into Golden Hare Books for a new read, or swing by Lifestory for Scandi-inspired homeware. If you’re craving something sweet, The Pastry Section is a must for some of the best cakes and bakes in Edinburgh.
When it’s time for lunch, make your way to The Raeburn, an elegant gastropub that’s popular with Edinburgh locals. If the sun’s shining, their large beer garden is the ideal spot to enjoy while indulging in seasonal Scottish dishes and a glass of something chilled.
Round off your afternoon with a visit to the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, just a short walk away. While the famous Victorian glasshouses are currently closed for renovation, the outdoor gardens are still spectacular. It’s a tranquil way to end a perfect Stockbridge day!
Craigies Farm, South Queensferry

If you’re craving a break from the city—especially as the Edinburgh Fringe is set to begin—head to Craigies Farm for a wholesome day out surrounded by fresh air and rolling countryside. Just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, this much-loved destination combines the charm of a working farm with fantastic food and family fun.
Craigies started as a one-table shop in a converted barn back in 1988 and has grown into one of Scotland’s leading farm experiences. Today, you can eat, shop, play and pick your own fruit all in one visit. The Farm Shop is packed with local produce, artisan goodies and freshly baked treats, while the cosy café serves up seasonal dishes using ingredients straight from the fields.
One of the biggest draws is their Pick Your Own experience. Depending on the season, you can fill your basket with strawberries, raspberries, cherries or apples—ideal for a summer day out. For families, Little Farmers (the adventure park) is a huge hit, with play zones designed for younger visitors.
Next week, they’re also running Kids’ Jam Classes on Tuesday and Thursday—a hands-on activity where little ones can learn the art of jam-making (and take home their own jar).
Whether you’re shopping for fresh produce, enjoying lunch with a view or letting the kids burn off energy, Craigies offers a full countryside experience without straying too far from Edinburgh.
