The Finishing Touch: Jewellery Makes an Outfit

Inspired by the V&A’s Cartier Exhibition, we explore how jewellery transforms an outfit

There’s a moment when you’re getting ready—outfit on, makeup done—when something still feels unfinished. And then, you reach for it: the glinting gold earrings, the delicate chain, the statement ring. Suddenly, the look is complete. Jewellery isn’t just an accessory; it’s the final flourish that ties everything together.

The V&A's Cartier exhibition explores how Cartier became one of the most iconic names in jewellery. But beyond the sparkle, it sends a clear message: an outfit isn't truly finished without accessories. Jewellery, in particular, has the power to transform a look entirely — adding personality, polish, and a sense of occasion. Inspired by this celebration of design, we’re turning our attention to the jewellery brands we stock and how you can complete your outfit with the perfect finishing touch.

Cartier at the V&A: A Legacy of Style, Craft, and Influence

The exhibition, which showcases over 350 pieces of jewellery from Cartier’s archive, is more than a display of beautiful objects. It’s a deep dive into the artistry, innovation and legacy behind one of the world’s most iconic jewellery houses. From glittering tiaras once worn by royalty to the sculptural watches that defined eras of elegance, each piece tells a story—not just of fashion, but of identity, influence and self-expression.

Cartier has long been hailed as “the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers”, and this exhibition reveals exactly why. Founded in Paris in 1847, the house rose to global prominence thanks to the vision of Louis, Pierre and Jacques Cartier. Their ambition and artistry helped transform a family business into an international powerhouse, soon opening ateliers in Paris, London and New York, and quickly gaining influential clients—from maharajas and monarchs, to Hollywood icons and modern fashionistas.

Notably, the whimsical floral jewellery designs by the British artist Frederick Mew, who worked for Cartier from the late 1920s until his retirement in 1971, were favoured by the British royals, many of which are displayed in this exhibition. Additionally, an engagement ring worn by Grace Kelly in High Society, which she received from Prince Rainier III of Monaco is also featured.

From the Art Deco movement to modern red carpet moments, Cartier has continually redefined what jewellery can mean—not just as a status symbol, but as a form of creative expression. Cartier’s fanbase today spans from royalty to Hollywood stars, with the jeweller’s Love bracelets—secured on the wrist with a tiny screwdriver—appearing on many aspirational shopping lists. These sleek, symbolic pieces speak to a new generation of wearers who value both meaning and minimalism.

Take a look at our Favourite Jewellery Brands:

Palas Jewellery

Palas Jewellery is an Australian brand founded in 1996 by sisters Anna Dimond and Eran Svigos. Combining their backgrounds in art and design, the pair set out to create meaningful, handcrafted jewellery that celebrates love, strength, and personal connection. Palas is known for its signature use of heartfelt words, natural gemstones, and symbolic charms—pieces designed to offer comfort, inspiration, and positivity during both joyful and challenging times.

A decade into the business, tragedy struck when Eran passed away suddenly from a brain aneurysm in her early thirties. This devastating loss deeply shaped the direction of the brand, with Anna choosing to continue and evolve Palas as a tribute to her sister’s creativity and passion. Today, each design reflects that legacy—jewellery made with authenticity and intention, designed to connect with the heart and carry personal meaning for those who wear or gift it. jewellery jewellery jewellery

Mimi Et Toi

Mimi et Toi is a Dutch jewellery brand founded in 2009 by designer and creative director Mimi van Dijk. Drawing inspiration from art, travel, and architecture, Mimi set out to create jewellery that challenges convention—both timeless and deeply personal. After travelling extensively and making jewellery by hand, she returned to Amsterdam to launch the brand, which continues to reflect her love of exploration.

At the heart of Mimi et Toi's identity is a modern, unconventional take on pearls—symbols of strength, elegance and authenticity that trace back to Mimi’s childhood memories of her grandmother’s pearl necklaces. This, combined with a passion for natural stones, raw shapes, and subtle contrasts, defines her aesthetic.

Each piece is designed to balance minimalism with character, offering jewellery that doesn’t follow trends but instead invites individuality and a sense of belonging. Mimi et Toi is for those who appreciate understated beauty and want their jewellery to feel like an extension of who they are.

Une À Une

Une Á Une is a jewellery brand founded in 2012 by French designer Rachel Guérin in the serene coastal village of Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. Surrounded by the rhythm of the Pacific and inspired by the natural beauty of her adopted home, Rachel began creating delicate, meaningful pieces that blended French elegance with bohemian charm.

More than just accessories, Une Á Une designs are created as modern talismans—intended to bring a sense of well-being, joy, and connection to those who wear them. Crafted with care using semi-precious stones, fine materials, and subtle detailing, each piece carries a gentle spirit of freedom and femininity.

Rooted in travel, nature, and soulful design, Une Á Une offers timeless jewellery that invites wearers to express their individuality and carry a little piece of sunshine with them, wherever they go.
