Key Trends to Know for Autumn / Winter

All The Latest Trends for the season ahead

Autumn checks

If what we are seeing on the catwalks is anything to go by, it would seem that fantastical fashion is out and real is in. Hurrah! With a focus less on exaggerated silhouettes, and more on tactile fabrics and drape, the motto for autumn/winter is very much - as Matthieu Blazy of Bottega Veneta put it  -  "making a monumnet out of everyday."

As far as trends go, we are seeing heritage checks and tweeds coming out in full force - think classic country weekend attire with Aran and argyle knitwear thrown in for good measure! Meanwhile, outerwear in teddy, shearling and faux fur offer us protection against the elements - a means of cocooning us from the politics of everyday.

So, let's delve deeper into the stand-out trends of the season ahead:

TREND - Country-Core

Yes, that's right, Country-house getaways are trending! And no we aren't referring to the debauched Saltburn variety.

Instead, this trend is all about bringing out those heritage checks, tweeds and herringbones. Mix those with luxe Argyle knitwear and you are good to go. A great starting point for this is a really good blazer - a little boxy in fit - or a pair of tailored trousers. Why? Each can be paired seamlessly with other pieces in your wardrobe - from cashmere knits to romantic blouses - as well as take you from office to bar.

Another reason to get on board is the tendency for these pieces to be finished in heavier, warmer and thus more durable fabrics as well as being finished in neutral tones - no overhauling your wardrobe to suit this trend. Forget about fads, this one is here to stay!

TREND - Boho is Back

Breaking free from the shakles of its summer-only association, the boho trend is back, and in a big way! Everyone knows that when it comes to boho-chic, you start with Chloe and the rest will follow! With its front row (including boho queen herself Sienna Miller) decked out in wedges and headbands, the boho-trend train is one we can definitely get on board with for Autumn.

We suggest starting with Biscuit brand Maison Hotel - but be quick! This french brand has proved itself to be very popular, and it is easy to see why. With floaty dresses, embroidery and flares galore, Maison Hotel gets it just right every time!

What makes the boho trend different this time around? Less is more! Forget the frills, new-boho is rooted in its 70s origins!

TREND - Suiting

Whilst we aren't quite ready to ditch the denim, we are finding ourselves reaching more and more towards tailoring - and not just for the office! Suiting is an easy way to feel and look well put together, and it is a huge trend for the season ahead - neck tie included!

Fashion powerhouses such as Schiaparelli really played with symbols of corporate power on the runway. Thankfully nothing like 80s Wall Street, instead, silhouettes were sleek and sexy with built in corsetry creating a striking image overall.

If nothing else, we love how easy a co-ord set is - slung over a crisp shirt or a worn in knit with heels or flats. Done!

TREND - Big Necklines

We're seeing lots of extravagant collars for this Autumn/Winter 2024. The trend of bigger is better is something labels such as Acne Studios and Supriya Lele have experimented with this season. Architectural mask-like collars and back-buttoned shirting with stiff collars.

It is safe to say that Rollneck and Funnel necklines are an absolute must in our wardrobe, particularly with our not-so-great weather. Biscuit brands Suncoo, Des Petits Hauts and Levete Room all have great chunky pieces on offer for the season - versatile knitwear that can be worn dressed up or down. If finer wool and cashmere is more your thing, then Absolut Cashmere and Jumper1234 are the ones to watch...and shop!

TREND - All that glitters

Autumn isn't Autumn without a little sparkle - especially as we near the end of the year. And with palettes becoming darker and moodier, that little sparkle really helps you stand out! From accessories to separates we saw some showstoppers at the Autum/Winter 2024 shows from the likes of from Dries Van Noten who played with colour and textured tinsel-like knitwear.

The beauty of this trend is that it can be adapted to suit your environment. At Biscuit, we love a sequinned separate and believe it really is more versatile than you think. Far from thinking this means you have to dress to the nines, instead switch to the mindset of that being your showstopping piece and dress around it - a sequinned skirt paired with a slouchy knit or t-shirt for example. Sequinned trousers paired with trainers - its all about balance.

Our Thoughts on the Trends

It's easy to see why people get so bogged down in trends and worrying about whether something is in or out. What's refreshing in 2024 is to see the industry moving away from the ludicrous and insatiable appetite for 'more' and instead focus on building up and from - expanding on what already exists and how to adapt to suit. Strategic purchases of versatile pieces that will see you through for years to come.
